Update : 05 Aug 2013, 07:57 AM

The International Crimes Tribunal 2 on Monday granted conditional bail to war crimes accused Syed Mohammad Kaiser, former state minister for agriculture and also a leader of the Peace Committee in Habiganj during the 1971 Liberation War.

The three-member tribunal headed by Justice Obaidul Hasan granted bail to the Jatiya Party leader under the custody of his son Syed Galib Ahsan.

According to the conditions, Kaiser must stay at his son's residence. Also, he cannot travel to Habiganj or any other part of the country.

Kaiser was asked to submit his passport and visa to the registrar of the tribunal, which also put a restriction on him contacting any witnesses of the prosecution.

He will also not be allowed to contact to the media during the bail.

On May 17,  Syed Mohammad Kaiser was arrested from the American Centre area of Vatara.

On May 15, ICT 2 issued an arrest warrant and asked the police to take necessary steps to arrest Jatiya Party leader Syed Kaiser as the prosecution filed an application in the Registrar's Office of the tribunal seeking his arrest.

Kaiser was a Muslim League leader during the war and later joined the BNP. During the regime of military dictator HM Ershad, he again switched his political affiliation and became a state minister for agriculture.

According to probe report, in 1971, the accused had formed a "Kaiser Bahini," which collaborated with the Pakistani occupation army in Habiganj.
