Tribunal lawyers argue over ‘indecency’

Update : 26 Aug 2013, 07:05 PM

The defence in the war crimes case against Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami protested a reportedly indecent comment from a prosecutor on AUgust 26.

Reacting to the prosecutor’s “abuse” during the cross examination of a prosecution witness at the International Crimes Tribunal 1, defence lawyer Mizanul Islam shouted: “If there is an answer, there is a counter answer too.”

Another defence lawyer Tajul Islam told the tribunal: “You certainly have heard [the comment], haven’t you?”

But the tribunal said they had not heard anything as they had been busy with the proceedings. “How can you say we heard it?”

Tajul said he thought so because the prosecutor had made the comment loud enough.

The tribunal said: “How dare you! You always speak hurting the tribunal.”

Tajul then said prosecutor Altaf Uddin had made indecent comments about Mizanul.

Conducting prosecutor Mohammad Ali then stood up and said he had heard prosecutors Altaf and Abul Kalam talking but “none of them uttered such words.”

Then the tribunal asked the prosecution to rather assist the judges during proceedings.

Defence lawyer Tajul also apologised for his misconduct.
