The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why the perpetrators who assaulted Ekushey TV reporter Nadia Sharmin should not be arrested and brought before it, reports UNB.
Journalist Nadia was assaulted on May 5 in Purana Paltan area when she was carrying out her duty by the supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam zealots.
The rule came following a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The High Court division bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain also asked the government to provide ETV reporter proper medical treatment in public hospital free of cost.
The HC also asked the director general of Health Directorate to form a medical board within a week with a senior professor as its head for the treatment of journalist Nadia.
It further asked the health secretary to ensure medical treatment of Nadia abroad if the designated board advices so.
The Hefazat men heckled and beat her up in public allegedly for covering the rally despite being a woman and “for being a member of the journalists’ community who favoured the Shahbagh movement against war criminals.”
