‘ACC can’t bring Tarique back’

Update : 19 Jul 2013, 05:23 AM

The Anti-Corruption Commission has no jurisdiction to bring back BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, elder son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in connection with a money-laundering case, reports UNB.

The law enforcement agencies and the home ministry could bring Tarique back and they would decide how they would do that, ACC Secretary Faizur Rahman Chowdhury told a monthly press briefing at its head office Thursday.

“Although a Dhaka court earlier issued a warrant for the arrest of Tarique Rahman, the ACC has no authority to bring him back from abroad,” he said.

The ACC, as per specific allegation, filed the graft case against Tarique and it was pursuing the case, he added.

On October 26, 2009, the ACC filed a case against Tarique and his business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun with Cantonment police station under the Money Laundering Act, accusing them of siphoning off over Tk204.3m to Singapore.
