Prosecution wants new witness in Alim case

Update : 27 May 2013, 07:21 AM

The prosecution at the International Crimes Tribunal Sunday requested to include a new witness in the case against war crimes suspect and former BNP lawmaker and minister, Abdul Alim.

Rana Dasgupta filed the plea with the court’s registrar in the morning and approached the tribunal of Justice Obaidul Hasan, Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Judge M Shahinur Islam after the court came into session.

The ICT 2 neither commented on nor gave orders concerning the plea. The war crimes tribunal set June 5 for further proceedings and scheduled the hearing of prosecution’s 22nd witness for the same date.

At the hearing, defense counsel AHM Ahsanul Haque Hena represented Alim. Alim, who remains the only war crimes suspect out on bail, is facing 17 charges including genocide and crimes against humanity he is alleged to have committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

On May 13, the prosecution declared their 19th witness Abed Hossain “hostile”, soon after his deposition against Alim.
