Police formed another probe body to investigate the death of Shamim Reza allegedly in police custody in the district.

He talked to the victim’s family members and others.

Two other members of the probe body are Additional SP of Narayanganj Sazzadur Rahman and Additional SP of Narsingdi Subroto Roy.

People staged protest rally in presence of the DIG and demanded punishment to three policemen – Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Khan, Inspector (investigation) Arup Tarafder of Sonargoan Police Station and Assistant Police Super of B Circle Uttom Prashad Pathok for the murder.

Shamim Reza, 26, son of Hazi Alauddin of Jhauchar village was picked up by Soanrgoan police on May 14 as a suspect for killing local Union Parishad Chairman Rafiqul Islam’s second wife, her brother and two housemaids.

Shamim’s father said the investigation officer (IO) of the four-murder case Inspector Arup Tarafder confined his son to a congested room and tortured for seven days to extract false statement confessing his involvement in the murders.

The IO also demanded Tk5 00000 from him and they paid Tk2, 50000 to free his son, he said.

Police produced Shamim Reza before the court on May 20 where he gave confessional statement saying that he was involved in the killings, police claimed.

Later the court sent Shamim to jail and as his condition deteriorated jail authorities shifted him to the Narayanganj General Hospital.

The emergency department of Narayanganj General Hospital referred Shamim to Dhaka medical College and Hospital where he died on May 22.

Narayanganj police earlier formed a three-member probe body headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (crime) Asrafuzzaman.

Both the probe body will separately investigate the incident, DIG Faruk Hossain said.

Shamim was a MBA degree holder from the government Tolaram College in Narayanganj.
