The government on Sunday tabled a bill proposing punishment for people providing false information on birth registration.
Syed Ashraful Islam, the local government minister, tabled the Birth and Death Registration Bill 2013 to amend the parent law on birth registration passed in 2004, which does not have provisions of punishment for providing false information.
“The provision of punishment for providing false information is a must for developing an accurate and qualitative information management system,” the minister told the house while justifying the bill.
The law proposed one year jail terms or a fine of Tk5,000 or both for providing wrong or falsified information on birth or deathregistration. Similarly, any registrar would face similar punishment for listing false information.
Union parishad chairmen, mayors of the municipality and city corporations, president of the cantonment board, and ambassadors of Bangladesh missions or their assigned officers are in charge of birth and death registration.
The new law also proposes setting up of a central registrar general’s office to coordinate and supervise the procedure.
The minister said the 2004 act authorised the registrars unlimited authorities to change information while recording births and deaths.
According to the rule, the bill went to the parliamentary standing committee on local government ministry for further scrutiny before passage in the House.
Three more bills tabled
Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Ghulam Muhammad Quader tabled the Partnership Bill 2013 with a view to increasing the fees for partnership in business. The bill went to the parliamentary standing committee on commerce ministry for further examination there.
The minister also initiated the Societies Registration Bill 2013, which went to the parliamentary watchdog on commerce ministry as well.
HasanulHaqInu, the information minister, tabled the Bangladesh Film and Television Institute Bill 2013, whichwent to the parliamentary standing committee on information ministry for further scrutiny.
