Update : 23 Apr 2013, 04:12 PM

Cross-examination of the 28th prosecution witness against war crimes suspect and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury at the International Crimes Tribunal 1 ended yesterday.

Poritosh Chandra Palit was cross-examined by defence counsel Ahsanul Huq, and the ICT 1 adjourned the proceedings for the day.

The witness testified at the tribunal on Sunday. In his deposition, he said, “In April 1971, the Pakistani army came to our house. We saw them attack and kill my father while hiding in a bush beside the house.”

Poritosh further said, “I assure you that it was Salauddin Quader Chowdhury who ordered them to kill my father.” Later, they burnt the body, he added. The son of Muslim League leader Fazlul Quader Chowdhury, SQ Chowdhury was particularly accused of masterminding the killing of Nutan Chandra Singha, a reputed philanthropist and industrialist in the port city of Chittagong.

SQ Chowdhury is said to have encouraged the Pakistani army to kill Nutan Chandra, even though they preferred to spare him.

The three-judge tribunal, set up to try crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, indicted the six-time Chittagong MP on 23 charges.
