During the next national election, journalists can use the Right to Information (RTI) Act to inform the masses about whether democracy is being practiced, say members of civil society.

They think it is important for journalists to use the Act to gather information that will ensure clarity while preparing for the elections, and increase accountability for the public.

Members of civil society voiced this opinion at a workshop titled, "Use for RTI in Journalism," organized by Shushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) at The Daily Star office on Wednesday.

Secretary of Shujan Badiul Alam Majumder said at the workshop: "Journalists can also use the RTI Act to collect the right information needed for research-based reporting."

Venkatesh Nayak, coordinator of the Access to Information Program, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, also talked at the workshop.

Nayak discussed the different ways the RTI Act can be used to gather the right information from different government organizations, including ministries.

"In India, journalists often use the RTI Act to uphold correct information, and point out factual errors," Nayak said.
