Shawkat Mahmud’s further remand hearing Monday

A Dhaka court fixed Monday for hearing on remand plea for Shawkat Mahmud, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and also an adviser to the BNP chairperson, in eight violence cases.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan will conduct the remand hearing, said defence counsel Md Sanaullah Mia.

On Sunday, the Investigation Officers of eight cases, three with Motijheel police and five with Paltan police filed against Shawkat Mahmud, prayed to the court for 10-day remand plea for each of the case.

Earlier, a Dhaka court has sent Shawkat Mahmud to jail in an arson case filed with Ramna police station.

According to the case documents, a group of BNP led-20-party men on January 9, hurled a petrol bomb on a private car in the capital’s Moghbazar, leaving its driver injured with burns. Later, the driver, Abul Kalam Azad, succumbed to his injuries on January 15.

In this connection, Sub-inspector Md Atiqur Rahman Biswas filed a case accusing 13 leaders and activists of BNP lead alliance with Ramna police station.

On August 18, detectives arrested Shawkat Mahmud from in front of Samarai Convention Centre in the capital’s Panthapath. The police said he was arrested in connection with three cases filed with Jatrabari and Ramna police stations on charges of arson attacks on vehicles, vandalising vehicles and crude bomb blasts.
