Mayor Nasir cleared of attempted murder charge

A Chittagong court has acquitted 17 people, including the newly-elected city Mayor AJM Nasir and Awami League lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari of Feni-2 of an attempted to murder case filed in 1993.

The court of Chittagong District and Session Judge Nurul Huda delivered the verdict on Wednesday morning, 22 years after the case was filed.

Earlier on January 24, 1993, an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Sufian Siddique filed the case against 18 party fellows.

According to the case statement, the accused, including AJM Nasir, Nizam Uddin Hazari and Hasan Mahmud Hasni, an Awami League leader and also councillor of the city corporation, attacked Sufian and tried to kill him when he was about to join a party rally at Laldighi Maidan.

The police submitted charge sheet against the accused on March 7 in 1993.
