A Barisal court has awarded death penalty to a person for killing a student of Barisal University.
The convict is Russell Mia alias Russell Matubbar
Barisal District Session Judge Md Anwarul Huq handed down the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The court also fined the convict Tk10 thousand.
District Public Prosecutor Advocate Giasuddin Kabul said: “The court has permitted the defence to file an appeal petition against the verdict within next seven working days.”
Defence lawyer Advocate Nazimuddin Ahmed Panna said they will file appeal petition before the High Court after getting the copy of the judgement.
Russell hacked Saoda Aktar Mallik to death as she broke her love affair with him on September 5, 2013.
Shahida Begum, mother of the victim, lodged a murder case against Russel with Barisal Kotwali police station on next day.
On September 12, 2013, Barisal Metropolitan Police arrested Russell from Chittagong Port area, one week after he killed Saoda.
Russell gave confessional statement on September 14, 2013, before the additional chief judicial magistrate court in Barisal.
