Two remanded for 10 days in Garo woman rape case

A Dhaka court has granted 10-day remand for each of the two accused who raped an indigenous woman on a moving microbus in the capital on May 21.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey passed the order on Thursday afternoon, rejecting the bail petition filed by defence lawyer Md Shahidul Islam.

Earlier in the day, Bhatara police OC Sazzad Hossain, also investigation officer of the case, produced the duo before the court with a 10-day remand plea.

The culprits, Mohammad Ashraf Khan and microbus driver Zahidul Islam Lavlu, were arrested early on Wednesday and the elite force members also seized the grey-coloured microbus, which was used for raping the victim.

At around 1am on Wednesday, a team of RAB conducted a drive in Kolapara upazila of Potuakhali district and held Tushar.

Later, based on Tushar's information, the RAB members arrested Lavlu from the Gulshan 1 area at around 5:25am.

According to the case statement, five criminals forcefully took the 21-year-old Garo woman inside a grey-coloured microbus while she was waiting at the Biswa Road bus stand for a bus on May 21.

The criminals, including the driver of the microbus, violated her on the running vehicle and threw her out of it in Uttara.

Later, a case was filed with Bhatara police station in this regard.
