A district court has sentenced four persons to death for killing a pregnant woman in 2008.

Judge Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan of First Additional District and Session Judge's Court delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.

The convicts are Abu Aiyub Lalon, husband of the victim, and his associates Muluk Hossain Bhuiyan, 30, Rana, 38, and Hanif Mia, 32.

The court also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each.

Defence Lawyer Humayun Kabir and Md Shorif Uddin said they would appeal to the higher court, challenging the verdict.

According to the case statement, Lalon and his accomplices hacked five-month pregnant Morsheda Akhtar severely following disputes over dowry and extra marital affairs on November 5, 2008.

Later, she died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital a day after the incident. A case was filed regarding the incident on November 8, 2008.

Morsheda's paternal uncle Sowkot Ali said: “She got married to Lalon in 1998. He started torturing her for dowry after some years of their marriage. They couple got into several conflicts regarding Lalon's extra marital affair with the wife of an expatiate from the area.”

He said: “As per Lalon's order, his associates hacked Morsheda to death.”
