Tonsillectomy doesn’t decrease body defense mechanism

Update : 04 Apr 2014, 07:54 PM

A tonsillectomy is a 3,000-year-old surgical procedure. Now it remains one of the most common surgical procedures in children in the United States. In reality, there are approximately 600,000 tonsillectomies performed each year on children and adults. The AAO-HNS identifies tonsillectomy as the second most common childhood surgery.

Palatine tonsils are secondary lymphoid organ involved with body defense mechanism. Because of this conception people, even physicians used to think the removal of tonsils may have hampered the immunity or body defense mechanism.

But this is not true in case of repeated infected tonsils & the tonsils which are someway making the children derailed from their normal living. You must have known, big tonsils cause breathing problems, sleep apnea, and block the food passage. In these ways it makes the children’s harder lives.

When tonsils itself get infected or make the children sick for getting back healthy, tonsillectomy should be performed. Tonsils are known as the guard of mouth gate. Just like a sick guard cannot perform his duty, infected tonsils cannot be a part of immunity. Despite, it causes the patient more trouble.

Moreover, If tonsillitis caused by Group A Beta-haemolytic Streptococcus (GABS) or another strain of streptococcal bacteria isn’t treated or if antibiotic treatment is incomplete, has an increased risk of dangerous disorders such as; Rheumatic fever, an inflammatory disorder that affects the heart, joints and other tissues and Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, an inflammatory disorder of the kidneys that results in inadequate removal of waste and excess fluids from blood.

There are 300 lymph nodes around the neck. These are also providing immunity to the body. So, removing tonsils will not put an affect effectively in body defense.

There are many studies performed to search any relation with immunity and tonsillectomy.  But most of authentic studies showed body immunity is not affected by removal of tonsils. Moreover, the effectiveness of Tonsillectomy or Adenotonsillectomy is proven by scientific research.

Adenotonsillectomy improves cognitive function, intelligence, memory, attention, quality of sleep, behavior, moods, emotions, and daytime functioning.  Sleep disordered breathing affects growth hormone production, appetite, and physical development.

Adenotonsillectomy corrects these defects. And tonsillectomy gives you an infection-free healthy living. But before tonsillectomy, it’s indication should be justified through proper history, clinical examinations and investigations.
