A new 250-bed specialised international standard hospital and a 50-seat nursing college will soon be opened at Tetuibari village of Gazipur sadar upazila.
The Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialised Hospital & Nursing College, set up by the initiative of the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust, is expected to be inaugurated on November 18 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the president of the trust.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will be present as chief guest at the inaugaration, while Sheikh Rehana, sister of Hasina and also the trust’s vice president, will be present as special guest
The hospital has been set up on 2.45 hectares of land at a cost of Tk2.15bn with the involvement of the Ministry of Social Welfare under Public Private Partnership.
The ministry provided over Tk1.69bn and the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust provided Tk450m for the project, and the hospital will be run by a Malaysian private healthcare provider named Kumpulan Perubatan (Johor) Sdn Bhd (KPJ).
Senior officials of the hospital management board and members of the trust said the hospital has been established to reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity, provide emergency and life-saving treatment to road traffic accident victims, ensure a proper safety net for the poor, support women victims of violence, act as referral hospital for the lower and higher level hospitals, fulfill academic purposes for undergraduate and post-graduate medical students, nurses and paramedics; and provide services for disabled people.
Dr Bayezid Khurshid Riaz, a member of the hospital management committee, told the Dhaka Tribune that the international-standard hospital was established to stop the outbound flow of a large number of Bangladeshi patients who seek medical treatment in countries like Singapore, Thailand and India.
To ensure world-class medical facilities, the memorial trust signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KPJ Malaysia, who will provide specialised doctors, nurses and technicians to serve at the hospital along with local doctors, Dr Riaz added.
Although the KPJ will act as the operator of the hospital, around 90% of the required staff will be recruited locally. However, three top officials - Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief of Nurse (CON) and Chief of Finance (COF) - will come from the KPJ.
The Malaysian hospital operators will provide free medical treatment for approximately one-third of the total patients, who will be referred by the trust’s nine-member hospital managment board, led by Prof Syed Modasser Ali, adviser to the prime minister on health and family welfare.
It was also learnt that Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana donated the land to the trust for building the hospital.
Focus will be given on the following areas of services: out-patient, emergency, in-patient, pathological lab and diagnostic facilities, safe blood transfusion, OT, housekeeping, management information system, referral, family planning, public health and quality assurance services.
