Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr FM Siddiqui on Saturday said that breast cancer can be cured completely through proper treatment if it is detected at an early stage.

“Breast cancer is not only a health concern for Bangladesh but also one of the major threats to women’s health worldwide. Thousands of women in the country are affected by the disease every year,” he said.

Professor Siddiqui said this at a dialogue titled “Analysis of the Global and National Situation of Breast Cancer and Ways Forward” held at the Dr Milon Hall on the BMU campus in the capital on Saturday, said a press release.

The BMU VC, however, said there is reason for hope as breast cancer is not an incurable disease. If detected at an early stage, it can be completely cured through proper treatment.

The Bangladesh Breast Cancer Awareness Forum (BBCAF) and BMU Clinical Oncology Department jointly organised the event. After the dialogue, a pink rally was brought out from the BMU campus. The rally paraded the main street from Shahbagh to Kawran Bazar and distributed awareness leaflets among the people.

BMU Clinical Oncology Department Chairman Professor Dr Syed Md Akram Hussain also spoke at the dialogue moderated by BBCAF Chief Coordinator Professor Dr Md Habibullah Talukder Ruskin.

Faculty member of Johns Hopkins University and noted public health expert Dr Halida Hanum Akhter, BMU Gynecological Oncology Department Chairman Professor Dr Jannatul Ferdous Jonaki, CCPR Chairperson Dr. Mosarrat Jahan Sourav, public health expert Dr Abu Jamil Faisal, and Founder of World Cancer Society Bangladesh Dr Syed Humayun Kabir were present, among others, at the event.
