Measles outbreak: Death toll reaches 642 as three children die in 24 hours

Total suspected measles cases rose to 83,139 nationwide

Three children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 8am Thursday, raising Bangladesh’s combined toll of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 642.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the latest fatalities were classified as suspected measles deaths, according to UNB.

With the update, suspected measles deaths rose to 550, while laboratory-confirmed deaths remained unchanged at 92.

A total of 1,110 new suspected measles cases were reported during the 24-hour period, taking cumulative suspected cases to 83,139 nationwide.

In the same period, 132 new laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded, bringing total confirmed infections to 10,059.

Since March 15, a total of 68,056 suspected measles patients have been hospitalised across the country, of whom 64,293 have recovered, DGHS data showed.
