Measles outbreak: Death toll hits 639 as eight children die in 24 hours

The latest eight deaths have been classified as suspected measles fatalities

Bangladesh’s measles outbreak claimed the lives of eight more children in 24 hours till 8am Wednesday, pushing the combined number of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 639.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), all eight deaths reported during the period were classified as suspected measles fatalities.

The latest figures show that 547 of the deaths have been recorded as suspected measles cases, while the number of laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remains unchanged at 92.

The country also reported 945 new suspected measles cases during the 24-hour period, raising the cumulative number of suspected infections to 82,029.

In addition, 94 new laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded, bringing the total number of confirmed measles infections nationwide to 9,927, according to DGHS data.

Since March 15, a total of 66,999 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalized across the country. Of them, 63,145 have recovered.
