Measles outbreak: Death toll exceeds 350

Of the nine deaths, three were confirmed measles cases, according to DGHS control room

Nine more children have died from measles and measles-like symptoms across the country in the last 24 hours, health authorities said on Saturday.

According to the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the deaths were recorded between 8:00am on Friday and 8:00am on Saturday. Of the nine deaths, three were confirmed measles cases.

During the same period, 1,435 children were newly identified with measles or measles-like symptoms. Among them, 489 cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.

Since March 15, a total of 352 children have died nationwide from measles and measles-related complications. Of these, 61 deaths were confirmed as caused by measles, while 291 children died with measles-like symptoms.

The DGHS said that 6,989 children have tested positive for measles since March 15, while 47,656 patients with measles-like symptoms have been admitted to differnt hospitals across the country.

The highest number of infections and deaths has been reported in Dhaka Division, where 173 children have died from measles or suspected measles infections and 26,080 children have been infected.
