Measles outbreak: Eight deaths, 1,191 suspected cases in 24 hours

Among the deaths, two were confirmed to have been caused by measles, while the remaining six children died with measles-like symptoms

Eight children died amid a measles outbreak, while 1,191 children were reported with measles-like symptoms during in 24 hours till 8am on Thursday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the deaths, two were confirmed to have been caused by measles, while the remaining six children died with measles-like symptoms, the DGHS said in its daily measles bulletin.

The two confirmed measles deaths occurred in Dhaka Division. Of the six deaths linked to measles-like symptoms, two were reported from Dhaka Division, two from Sylhet Division, one from Rajshahi Division, and one from Chittagong Division.

During the same 24-hour period, 811 children were admitted to hospitals across the country with measles-like symptoms, while 92 cases were confirmed as measles infections.

Division-wise, Dhaka recorded the highest number of confirmed cases at 78 children. Barisal reported six cases, Rajshahi four, and both Chittagong and Khulna two each.

The DGHS said 1,191 children in total showed measles-like symptoms nationwide during the period, of whom 496 were from Dhaka Division.
