Menstrual Regulation (MR) and Menstrual Regulation with Medication (MRM) services are essential and more initiatives to raise awareness of them are needed, experts and government officials said at a recent seminar.
RedOrange and NEARS organized the seminar on MR and MRM in Dhaka on Friday. It was organized under Safety Wing, a project that was implemented in three districts with a focus on raising awareness and providing information on MR and MRM, according to a press release.
Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP) Director General Sahan Ara Banu attended the event as the chief guest, while Md Aminul Islam, DGFP line director (FP-FSD), and Dr Mohammed Sharif, DGFP director (MCH services) and line director (MC-RAH), attended as special guests.
The seminar was also attended by MR service providers, CSOs and grassroots organizations.
MR and MRM are legal services provided by the government to reduce the maternal mortality rate in Bangladesh. However, many women and girls do not know about the availability of these services.
In addition, many service providers refrain from providing MR and MRM for misguided social and religious reasons. As a result, women and girls frequently end up terminating unwanted pregnancies through unskilled service providers instead.
A substantial proportion of maternal mortality is caused by unsafe abortions conducted by unskilled service providers.
Arnob Chakrabarty, managing director of RedOrange Media and Communications, said: “Misconceptions about MR are present in every nook and corner of the society. Therefore, public awareness is needed to normalise MR. To ensure this, we need a holistic communication package.”
Chief guest Sahan Ara Banu took note of the issues raised at the seminar and said they would be worked on in the field.
Md Aminul Islam said: “We often see there is a gap in knowledge and perception between the service receiver and service provider regarding MR services.”
Dr Mohammed Sharif said a proper guideline for MR was adopted in 2014, which had improved the quality of the services.
