Coronavirus infections in Bangladesh may witness a major spike in March-April due to the Omicron variant, Director General of the Health Directorate Prof Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam said on Monday.

Considering the situation, the health directorate is working to “strengthen hospital capacity around the country so that more patients can get treatment," he said while speaking to reporters at his office.

Keeping in mind high demand for oxygen during the previous peak caused by the Delta variant last year, installation of 40 oxygen generators in different hospitals is at its final stage, he said.

He also mentioned that the health directorate has managed to set up more oxygen generators.
New Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh rose sharply for the third consecutive day on Monday.

The health authorities reported 674 infections in a day, the highest in 13 weeks, taking the total caseload to 1,587,140.

The death toll rose to 28,081 as another four fatalities were reported, while the daily infection rate jumped to 3.37%.
