The jail superintendent and a jailer of the women’s section at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur have been diagnosed with Covid- 19.

The infected officials are Jail Superintendent Halima Khatun and Jailer of ward No 1 Ritesh Chakma.

Acting senior jail superintendent in-charge Gias Uddin and acting jailer of the women’s section Syed Shah Sharif confirmed this to Bangla Tribune on Friday. Both the officials were currently in isolation at their homes.

On July 26, Brigadier (retd) Abdur Rahim, death-row convict in 10-truck arms case, was also infected with Covid-19 and admitted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. He was later transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

According to prison sources, the inmate facing capital punishment was staying in his condemned cell alone.

Following this, panic spread among the jail authorities and prisoners. The officials have been instructed to be vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure the prevention of Covid-19 inside the prison.

Due to the surge of Covid cases, the prison authorities have suspended in-person meetings of the inmates with their relatives. But they can talk to family members on phone.
