Update : 03 Aug 2021, 09:04 PM

The third consignment of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine from Japan, comprising 616,780 vials, has arrived in Dhaka.

Health Ministry Public Relations Officer Maidul Islam confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune on Tuesday.

With the third shipment, the total number of vaccines dispatched from Japan currently stands at 1,643,300.

The delivery is part of Japan’s commitment towards supplying over three million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine under the Covax facility.

A flight of All Nippon Airways carrying the load had earlier left Narita airport at 9:15pm on Monday (Japan Standard Time).

The first vaccine shipment from Japan containing 245,200 doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca, in collaboration with Oxford, reached Bangladesh on July 24, while the second one, comprising 781,320 vials, arrived in Dhaka on Saturday.

Bangladesh launched its mass inoculation drive by using Covishield — the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India — in February.

However, some 1.5 million people were left hanging for the second dose of the vaccine after the stock of the jabs purchased from India ran out.

The dispensation of the second dose of the vaccine was later continued, albeit only in Dhaka division for now, on Monday.
