Covid-19 cases rapidly cross 29,500 in Rangpur division

A total of 618 new patients were reported after testing 1,681 collected samples at the positivity rate of 34.79% on Monday in the division

The number of Covid-19 cases has rapidly crossed the 29,500 mark further deteriorating the situation in Rangpur division where the daily positivity rate continues rising hastily in recent weeks.  

Health officials said the number of Covid-19 cases speedily climbed to 29,542 as 618 new patients were reported after testing 1,681 collected samples at the positivity rate of 34.79% on Monday in the division.

Earlier, the daily positivity rates were 34.23% on Sunday, 43% on Saturday, 21.56% on Friday, 34.79% on Thursday, 40.79% on Wednesday and 31.32% on Tuesday last.

The district-wise break-up of total 29,542 patients now stands at 6,624 in Rangpur, 1,279 in Panchagarh, 2,077 in Nilphamari, 1,677 in Lalmonirhat, 2,015 in Kurigram, 3,979 in Thakurgaon, 9,537 in Dinajpur and 2,354 in Gaibandha.

Meanwhile, 10 more patients from Rangpur, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh and Dinajpur died during the last 24 hours ending at 8 am today raising the number of casualties to 592 in the division.

“A total of 180 Covid-19 patients, the highest number in a month since June 5 last, died in all eight districts of Rangpur division,” Focal Person of the Covid-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

The district-wise break-up of the 592 fatalities now stands at 121 in Rangpur, 209 in Dinajpur, 105 in Thakurgaon, 40 in Nilphamari, 29 in Kurigram, 28 in Panchagarh and Gaibandha each and 32 in Lalmonirhat.

“The average casualty rate currently stands at 2% in the division,” Dr Siddiqui said.

Acting Divisional Director (Health) Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam said a total of 1,65,550 collected samples were tested till Monday, and of them, 29,542 were found Covid-19 positive with an average positivity rate of 17.84% in the division.

Meanwhile, the total number of healed patients reached 21,340 with recovery of 309 more infected patients on Monday in the division where the average recovery rate currently stands at 72.24%.

 “The average recovery rate of Covid-19 infected patients was 97.55% about four months ago on March 9 last in the division where the same sharply dropped by 25.31% to 72.24% on Monday,” Dr Islam said.

Among the 21,340 recovered patients, 5,216 of Rangpur, 866 of Panchagarh, 1,707 of Nilphamari, 1,222 of Lalmonirhat, 1,350 of Kurigram, 2,474 of Thakurgaon, 6,634 of Dinajpur and 1,871 of Gaibandha districts.

Of the total 29,524 infected patients, 511 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 26 critical patients at ICU beds and 11 at High Dependency Unit beds, after recovery of 21,340 patients and 592 deaths while 7,495 are remaining in home isolation.

“Meanwhile, the number of citizens who got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in the division rose to 6,03,611, and among them, 3,89,039 got the second dose of the jab till Monday,” Dr Islam added.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu expressed concern over the hastily rising Covid-19 positivity and fatality rates.

He called upon all citizens to strictly abide by the health directives, hygiene rules and remain at home during the current lockdown to remain safe as the positivity rate continues rising speedily in the division.
