The Covid-19 lockdown has been extended for another week in Rajshahi city in an effort to bring the worsening situation under control.
Now the lockdown which started on June 11 will remain in force until June 30 midnight.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Jalil announced the extension of the lockdown at a press conference on Wednesday noon.
He said an emergency meeting of high-ranking officials from the administration and health department, including the city mayor, was held on Tuesday. At that meeting, it was decided to increase the lockdown after analyzing the situation in Rajshahi.
Along with lockdown in the city corporation area it was decided to increase the restrictions in the upazila areas, so that people cannot go out except for urgent need.
During the lockdown, all shops, markets and restaurants will remain closed, except for grocery stores and pharmacies, said the DC.
Also, all modes of public transport will stay off the roads. No vehicle including bus, train will be able to enter Rajshahi city or leave Rajshahi.
However, vehicles providing emergency services will remain out of the purview of the restrictions.
Also, agricultural and food items including mangoes will be transported, added the DC.
All kinds of social, political and religious ceremonies will remain halted.
A seven-day lockdown was first imposed in Rajshahi city on June 11.
Later the authorities extended it for another week till June 24 to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission in the city.
