Covid-19: Section of Srimangal under lockdown as infections rise

The lockdown might be extended if the situation does not return to normal, authorities say

The district administration has imposed a lockdown on a specific area in Srimangal of Moulvibazar following a rise in Covid-19 infections.

All business establishments from Srimangal’s Elahi Jame Mosque area to Jameya Islami Madrasa area have been ordered on Thursday to keep shut for an indefinite period.

Sreemangal Upazila Assistant Commissioner (land) and Executive Magistrate Md Nesar Uddin imposed the lockdown at 1:30am on Wednesday. 

“A section of the district town, including Shidur Khan Road, has been brough under a lockdown. No public gatherings will be allowed in that area. All shops and commercial establishments will remain closed until further notice,” Nesar Uddin told Dhaka Tribune. 

He also said that the lockdown might be extended if the situation does not return to normal.

At least 20 people were tested Covid-19 positive in Srimangal in the last four days. Of them, 18 belong to the area placed under the lockdown. 

Of the 18, 12 are from Chapainawabganj who arrived in Srimangal on May 20.
