Covid-19: Over 56,000 people inoculated on Monday

Number of vaccine recipients in decline

The health authorities in Bangladesh have inoculated 56,431 more people against the contagious Covid-19 disease, taking the tally of those taking the first jab to 5,319,679 since January 27.

As many as 32,544 men and 23,887 women were administered their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Monday and three of them experienced adverse events, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The number of vaccine recipients in the country has been fluctuating for the last few days. The figure in the past three days (except Friday) was 58,424; 65,368 and 70,407 respectively.

In total 3,310,141 men and 2,009,538 have been immunized across the country.  

Of them, total 931 people have experienced adverse events. 

As many as 6,744,569 people had completed vaccine registration till 5:30pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, while talking to media in Dhaka, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said that the vaccination program is running as of now but there might be a change of plans as Bangladesh did not receive the vaccine consignment it was due to receive this month. 

“We are continuing the vaccination program. We did not receive the vaccine that was supposed to arrive this month but we are trying to get it as soon as possible. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also informed Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi about the matter.

"If we get the number of vaccines we are supposed to get, the vaccination program will not be disrupted. And if we don't get the vaccine, then naturally we have to think anew,” he added.

Highest number of people inoculated in Dhaka

On Monday, the highest 14,479 people were vaccinated in Dhaka division. Among them, 6,394 people were vaccinated in the capital city while 8,085 people were vaccinated outside the capital. 

Till now, a total 1,648,029 people have received the first of the two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in the division.

Meanwhile, a total 257,132 people have been inoculated in Mymensingh division, 1,071,910 in Chittagong, 603,685 in Rajshahi, 542,474 in Rangpur, 685,970 in Khulna, 234,219 in Barisal, and 276,260 in Sylhet division. 

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed more than 2,797,000 lives and infected as many as 127,895,000 people across the world till Monday night, according to worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 103,080,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 219 countries and territories across the planet.
