Bangladesh has recorded yet another 21 deaths from Covid-19 and 1,615 fresh cases overnight. The latest single-day death toll is the lowest since August 3 when the figure stood at 30.
The recovery count surged to 247,969 after another 2,375 patients were discharged from hospitals across the country over the period, read a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Wednesday.
It said the tally of infections surged to 342,671 with the new cases. To date, as many as 4,823 patients died of coronavirus in the country.
Among the total infections, 72.36 % patients have recovered, while 1.41% died so far since the first three Covid-19 positive cases were confirmed in the country on March 8.
Bangladesh logged the highest single-day deaths (64) on June 30 after reporting the first fatality from the virus on March 18.
The fatalities
Among the 21 deaths, 16 were male and five female, the press release said, adding, one was in the 20s, one in the 30s, two in their 40s, seven in their 50s, while 10 were above 60 years.
According to the division-wise data, 10 deaths took place in Dhaka division, five in Chittagong division and the rest are in other divisions.
Among the total 4,823 deaths, 2,349 deaths occurred in Dhaka division; 1,013 in Chittagong division, 324 in Rajshahi division, 410 in Khulna division, 180 in Barishal division, 217 in Sylhet division, 228 in Rangpur division, and 102 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.
A total of 1,770,106 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.
Infection rate below 15% for 11th day
A total of 13,360 samples were tested at 94 authorized laboratories across the country in the last 24 hours.
Of the total samples collected during the period, 12.09 % came out positive, while 19.36 % cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the press release added.
Interestingly, the infection rate has been below the 15% mark since September 6. The country witnessed the highest test positivity rate of 31.91% on August 3.
As of Wednesday afternoon, at least 939,706 people died from the Covid-19 outbreak and there are 29,756,176 currently confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.
China was the world’s first country which on January 11 reported the first death from the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province.
