Coronavirus: Global daily cases hit new high

The number of daily cases increased by 5.78% on Thursday compared to Wednesday

Daily new cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic have hit a new high globally while the world has seen a gradual increase in the number of cases for the third consecutive day.

According to Worldometer, a total of 208,864 Covid-19 cases were recorded on Thursday, taking the total number of cases to 10,974,421.

The number of daily cases increased by 5.78% on Thursday compared to Wednesday. This marks a rise of 11,422 compared to the previous day (Wednesday), which saw 197,442 new cases.

A week ago, on June 25, the number of new cases worldwide was 181,096 and a week before that on June 18, it was 141,609.

Till now, the number of active cases stands at 4,317,090.

Of the active cases 4,259,222 (99%) were identified to be in mild condition while the rest 57,868 (1%) have been marked as serious or critical.

At the same time, 6,150,606 people from across the world have recovered fully from the infection or were discharged from treatment – which was 92% of cases which had an outcome.

The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed 524,176 lives since its discovery in December 2019 – which was 8% of cases which had an outcome.

In January, China effectively shut down Wuhan and placed its 11 million residents in effective quarantine after the novel coronavirus infection turned into outbreak.

The virus is thought to have emerged late last year in a Wuhan market illegally trading wildlife. It can cause pneumonia, respiratory diseases, among others, and spreads between people in droplets from coughs and sneezes.

Till now, coronavirus or Covid-19 has affected 213 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances.
