Covid-19: Big uptick in recoveries

3,099 cases reported with 38 new deaths in 24 hours

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday said that a total of 34,027 people – 37.55% of all infected – had recovered from the Covid-19 infection, according to the data by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control And Research (IEDCR).

Bangladesh also has reported 38 new deaths and 3,099 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.

With the latest figure, the number of total confirmed cases crossed the 90,000 mark to 90,619, and the death toll rose to 1,209.

DGHS Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fatality rate 1.33%

Prof Nasima Sultana said, of the deceased, 32 were men and six were women. The death toll accounts for 1.33% of the total infected.

Previously on June 12, Bangladesh registered the highest number of Covid-19 deaths (46) and cases (3,471) in a single day. 

Deaths from the coronavirus infection crossed the 1,000 mark in Bangladesh on June 10 while the country recorded the first fatality on March 18. The country crossed the 100 mark in deaths on April 20.

20.61% test positive in 24hrs

The DGHS official said as many as 15,733 samples were collected between Sunday and Monday.

Of those, 15,038 samples were tested in 58 authorized labs across the country and 3,099 of them or 20.61% tested Covid-19 positive, she said.

In all, 519,503 tests have been conducted so far, she added.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first case of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by the new strain of coronavirus, Sars-CoV-2. The virus broke out in China's Wuhan in December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

Till now the fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 435,850 lives and infected more than 8,008,390 people globally, according to worldometer.

As many as 4,135,523 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the world.
