Covid-19: Bangladesh records 37 new deaths, 3,187 cases

A total of 15,772 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, of which 20.21% were found positive

Bangladesh has recorded 37 new deaths from the deadly Covid-19 in a 24-hour span on Thursday, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,049.

The country also recorded 3,187 new Covid-19 cases over the same period, taking the total number of active cases in the country to 78,052.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Thursday afternoon, through a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.

She said that as many as 15,772 samples were tested, of which 20.21% were found positive in the last 24 hours. Over the same period the authorities collected 16,114 samples for testing. Till Thursday, a total of 4,57,332 tests have been conducted so far in 55 labs across the country. 

A total of 848 people have recovered from coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, marking a 21.46% recovery rate considering detection. The total number of patients who had recovered from the infection in the country now stands at 16,747.

Prof Nasima said that among the 37 new deceased, 30 were male and 7 were female. Of them, 20 were from Dhaka division, seven from Chittagong, four from Rajshahi, three from Sylhet, two from Barisal and one from Rangpur. 

She also said two of the deceased were aged between 31 and 40, four between 41 and 50, eight between 51 and 60, 22 between 61 and 70 and one between 71 and 80.

“Of the deceased, 28 died at hospitals and another 9 at home,” she added.

The additional DG further said that 671 people were sent to isolation and 155 left from it over the past 24 hours span,  taking the number of people currently in isolation in the country to 13,637 and the number of people relieved from isolation to 4,837.

A total of 312,344 people were taken to home and institutional quarantine since the beginning of the pandemic in the country. Of them 253,345 were released while 58,999 remain in quarantine.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh crossed its 1,000 mark in deaths from Covid-19 in just 84 days of recording the country’s first fatality from the deadly virus.

On the same day, the country also logged 3,190 fresh Covid-19 cases -- highest in a 24-hour span, since the first cases reported back in March.

On Tuesday, the country recorded 45 deaths -- highest in a 24-hour span from the deadly Covid-19, and crossed the 3,000 mark in fresh cases in a single day.
