The Rajabazar neighbourhood under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be completely locked down from Tuesday midnight on a pilot basis as it is considered a Covid-19 red zone, Mayor Atiqul Islam said on Monday.

To ensure that residents of the area did not need to leave their homes during the 14-day lockdown, all necessary preparations had been made, said Faridur Rahman Khan Iran, city councillor of Rajabazar.

“We will provide food to low-income people free of cost,” he remarked.

“Middle and upper-middle-class households can purchase daily essentials like food and medicine from our dedicated mobile shop,” said the councillor.

The residents of the area will also be provided with medicine and ambulance services as well as burial facilities.

A  Covid-19 sample collection booth would be installed in the area so that residents could be diagnosed without having to leave their locality, Iran mentioned.

The area would be locked down for 14 days initially and further actions would be taken after evaluating the results, he added.

“There are 16,000 voters in the Rajabazar area, but around 50,000 people live here. We have arranged facilities that will serve all the people,” Iran said.

Residents of the area, other than doctors, law enforcers, journalists and some emergency service workers, would not be allowed to go to work during the lockdown, he added.
