Update : 03 Jun 2020, 06:57 PM

Around 50 officials and employees of Bangladesh Bank have been infected with coronavirus and another about 100 staffers of the central bank showed Covid-19 symptoms, as per the latest data of Bangladesh Bank Officers’ Welfare Council, Dhaka (BBOWCD).

The council in a letter to Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Fazle Kabir sought roster duty for the staffers.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Serajul Islam said that they came to know about the matter from a letter of the BBOWCD.

Bangladesh Bank has a strong workforce of nearly 5,000. Of them, many officials and employees were infected with coronavirus, he said.

After the office resumed on May 31, the main entrance of the BB headquarters and its corridors remain crowded, while staffers have to commute through staff bus, the letter says.

Under the given situation, it is not possible to maintain social distancing to contain the spread of COVID-19, adds the letter.

In this context, BBOWCD demanded roaster duty for central bankers during the pandemic period.

Bangladesh Bank Officers’ Welfare Council, Dhaka President H. M Delowar Hossain and General Secretary Mohammad Shahariar Shiddiqe jointly signed in the latter.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Shahriar says the number of infected 50 has been collected from different BB departments.

A total of eight commercial bankers have died of  Covid-19 so far.
