Covid-19: Bangladesh reports 37 new deaths, 2,695 cases in 24 hrs

The country's death toll now stands at 746

Bangladesh has reported 37 new deaths and 2,695 new cases in the last 24 hours.

With the latest figure, the number of total confirmed cases crossed the grim 55,000 mark to 55,140 and the death toll rose to 746.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon, in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.

Of the deceased 28 were men and nine women.

On Tuesday, Bangladesh country logged 2,911 Covid-19 cases -- highest in a 24-hour span, since the first cases reported back in March.

The country also registered the highest number of Covid-19 deaths (40) in a single day on May 31. Deaths from coronavirus infection crossed the grim 700 mark in the country on Tuesday.

Prof Nasima, also the DGHS acting DG, said as many as 15,103 samples were collected in the past 24 hours. Among them, 12,510 were tested in 50 labs across the country.

In all, 345,583 tests have been conducted so far, she said. 

In the briefing, the DGHS acting DG also said that 470 more Covid-19 patients had recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours.

So far 11,590 people (21.02% of all infected) have made full recoveries after being infected by the novel coronavirus.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus, Sars-CoV-2. The virus broke out in China's Wuhan in December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus had claimed 382,727 lives and infected 6,464,534 people across the world as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 3,077,808 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
