The upward trend of members of Bangladesh Police testing positive for coronavirus continues as 44 policemen have tested positive in the last 24 hours, raising the tally to 262.
More than half of the infected policemen are from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) till Friday evening, according to the police headquarters.
There were 218 confirmed cases of coronavirus positive policemen while 652 members of the police force were placed on a home or institutional quarantine until Thursday.
Officials at the police headquarters said policemen across the country are unknowingly contracting Covid-19 while performing their duties
Policemen are on regular patrols to ensure social distancing and monitor the lockdown situation across the country to curb the spread of coronavirus, they said.
Additionally, they are involved in various social duty including spraying disinfectants in the streets, helping the working people and taking them to the hospital for treatment, they added.
On Thursday, Assistant Inspector General (Media) Md Sohel Rana, at the police headquarter, said that they have three hospitals ready for treating the infected police members.
We are doing everything to ensure better treatment for the infected policemen, the police official added.
According to police sources, 136 out of 262 infected are the members of DMP till Friday evening.
Besides, three members of the police in T&IM department, 9 members of Special Branch (SB), 5 members of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), 26 members of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), one member of Mymensingh-2 APBN, three members of River Police, one member of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), one member of Anti-Terrorism Unit, 19 policemen in Narayanganj, Six in Narsingdi, 16 in Gazipur, 9 in Kishoreganj, 18 in Gopalganj, 3 in Sherpur, one in Mymensing, one in Jamalpur, one in Moulvibazar, 2 in Dhaka district, and one in Munshiganj had tested positive for Covid-19.
