First special flight with 264 UK citizens takes off

The UK is scheduled to operate four special flights from Dhaka to London

264 UK citizens including 10 infants have left Dhaka via a special chartered flight amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A British Airways flight took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 4:10pm Tuesday.

Mohammad Sohel Kamruzzaman, public relation officer of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) confirmed the matter.

Earlier a British Airways special chartered flight arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:30pm.

The UK is scheduled to operate four special flights from Dhaka to London for British tourists, short term visitors, and their direct dependents to return to the UK from Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

British visitors currently in Sylhet will also have the option of booking a domestic transfer from Sylhet to Dhaka ahead of each of these flights, the British High Commission said on Saturday.

Up to 150,000 British nationals visit Bangladesh every year. There are currently no commercial options available to return to the UK from Bangladesh due to flight restrictions announced by the Government of Bangladesh.

The willing British citizens can book these flights through Corporate Travel Management (CTM) or travel management partner.

Bookings for each flight will close 24 hours before the flight is scheduled to depart and tickets will not be on sale at the airport.

Earlier, the US and European citizens and citizens of other countries left Dhaka on a voluntary basis to reunite with their families.

So far, till Tuesday, around 3,382 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in Bangladesh. At least, 110 people died of the deadly virus while 87 patients recuperated.
