Field administration officials, the frontline fighters of the coronavirus outbreak, have also test positive for the virus alongside medical professionals, police and journalist.
According to the Ministry of Public Administration, eight Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) cadres got infected by the virus till Sunday and five of them are executive magistrates.
The executive magistrates were deployed in Narayanganj, Gazipur and Kishoreganj districts which are the most affected areas from the outbreak after Dhaka.
Three out of the five infected executive magistrates -- Tania Tabassum (35th batch), Farjana Akter (36th batch) and Abdul Matin Khan (37th batch) – are from the Narayanganj district administration.
Meanwhile, Gazipur Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Golam Morshed Khan Pavel (33th batch) and Kishoreganj Executive Magistrate Himadri Khisa (34th batch) are the other ones to get infected.
The executive magistrates usually work under the district administration to enforce law and order, operate mobile court, control commodities price at field level, etc.
A 20th batch official Aminul Islam, labour councilor of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, also got infected by the coronavirus as he was in charge of 4,000 Bangladeshi labours, undergoing test for the virus.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Saifur Rahman (22th batch) died of the coronavirus infection on April 6.
Another deputy secretary also got infected, however, the ministry did not disclose his name yet.
Ministry of Public Administration Secretary Sheikh Yusuf Harun said: “The officials are getting treatment under special care and those who came in close contact with them were sent to quarantine.
“Other officers are requested to work carefully with proper protection and safety measures.”
“Everyone has to suffer, if the officials get infected with Covid-19, as the government has assigned them for many important tasks,” he added.
As of Sunday, Bangladesh has reported 91 deaths and 2,456 cases of Covid-19.
The fast-spreading virus has claimed over 165,060 lives globally and infected more than 2,407,340 people, according to Worldometers.
As many as 625,128 people have also recovered from Covid-19, a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus, which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the globe.
