Some 2500 Bangladeshis are stranded in the neighbouring country

Update : 17 Apr 2020, 06:11 PM

US-Bangla Airlines says it will operate special flights to bring back Bangladeshis stranded in Indian cities of Chennai and Kolkata due to travel restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Six flights on the Chennai-Dhaka route will be operated between April 20 and 25, US Bangla spokesperson Kamrul Islam told UNB.

Another two flights, scheduled for April 21 and 23, will fly in Bangladeshis from Kolkata, according to Islam, the general manager for public relations.

Some 2500 Bangladesh nationals, including over 1000 students, are stranded in different Indian cities due to current lockdown there, according to the foreign ministry.

Earlier on March 30, it was reported that there are broadly three categories of Bangladesh nationals currently in India - who are willing to stay back until situation improves but facing cash crisis, students and those who are released from hospitals after necessary treatment.

Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi is in touch Dhaka to work out a proper plan as these Bangladesh citizens in India are not just from one city.

The foreign ministry said missions in India are looking into welfare issues of Bangladesh nationals.

Officials are in constant contact with Bangladesh citizens in India over phone.
