The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has formed a cyber verification cell to prevent any rumours regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Lt Col Sarwar Bin Kashem, legal and media wing director of RAB, said: “Recently we have observed that a vested group is trying to spread misinformation and rumours regarding coronavirus online.

“For this reason, we have increased our surveillance. Recently we arrested 10 individuals across the country for their alleged involvement in spreading misinformation and rumours about coronavirus, while over 50 people are currently under watch.”

He urged people not to like or share any posts online without verification.

“If anyone wants to verify any information related with the virus then they can send it to RAB’s ‘Cyber News Verification Centre’ via Facebook. We then will check its authenticity and then notify citizens,” he added.

Sarwar said, “We, along with other law enforcement agencies of the country, are working very hard to ensure the safety of people in this crisis.

“I urge all to stay at home to stop the spread of coronavirus.”

The Bangladesh authorities till Thursday detected a total of 330 Covid-19 patients in the country.

The pandemic has so far claimed the lives of over 89,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories, including 21 in Bangladesh.
