Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar on Saturday morning.

He arrived at the memorial at around 10:15am.

Earlier on Friday, the president’s Press Wing and relevant administrative sources said the newly elected president would visit the National Memorial to pay tribute to the martyrs.

According to sources at the Public Works Department, security measures were strengthened across the National Memorial area ahead of the president’s visit.

After laying a wreath, a smartly turned-out contingent of the armed forces presented the president with a guard of honour. Mirza Fakhrul then observed a moment of silence in memory of the martyrs before signing the National Memorial’s visitors’ book.

Mirza Fakhrul was elected the country’s 23rd president on Thursday.

Before taking the oath of office at Bangabhaban on Friday evening, he paid tribute to the graves of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Friday afternoon.
