Bangladesh has officially recognized Grenada, an island nation in the Caribbean region. The approval came on Thursday at a meeting of the Advisory Council chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

Later, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.

“Bangladesh has recognized the Caribbean island nation of Grenada. Today, the Advisory Council approved it. Grenada is involved with many international forums. We hope this recognition will help strengthen and deepen our relations with them,” he said.

Grenada, the southernmost island of the north–south arc of the Lesser Antilles, lies in the eastern Caribbean Sea about 100 miles (160km) north of Venezuela. Oval in shape, it measures roughly 21 miles (34km) in length and 12 miles (19km) in width.

Grenada gained independence within the Commonwealth in 1974 and later became a member of the United Nations, the first of the six West Indies Associated States to do so.
