Recent media reports misrepresented Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul’s comments on the proposed commission, said a ministry press release

The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs on Thursday clarified that no government decision has been made regarding the formation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

In an official release, the ministry stated that recent reports in certain media outlets had presented the comments of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on the proposed commission in a fragmented and misleading manner.

"The law adviser, in his most recent statement, said that discussions would be held with political parties, student leaders, and experts at an appropriate time to consider the way forward on this matter," the release said.

It added: "He also reiterated a point he had made earlier — that the idea of forming a Truth and Reconciliation Commission may only be considered after justice is served for the mass killings committed during the July uprising, and only if leaders of the deposed party publicly express remorse."

The statement, signed by Law Ministry Spokesperson Dr Md Rezaul Karim, further noted that the adviser emphasized the potential role of such a commission in establishing that those responsible for the mass killings are permanently disassociated and rejected by the nation.
