Field-level police personnel may carry weapons like rifles, but they will not be equipped with heavy lethal arms, said Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after visiting the headquarters of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) in the capital on Saturday.
The home affairs adviser said that heavy weapons will only be available to specialized units such as the Armed Police Battalion (APBn). The government is working to ensure overall development of law enforcement agencies, including APBn and regular police stations.
Claiming that the law and order situation has significantly improved in the past 11 months under the interim government, the adviser said that this year’s Eid was celebrated peacefully across the country, except for a few minor incidents.
