The interim government has finalised the draft of the Personal Data Protection Ordinance, 2025 to ensure the security of personal data.
The announcement came in a press release issued by the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology on Tuesday.
According to the release, a citizen’s personal data is their asset, and the state is obligated to protect this data. "To ensure privacy and data protection, consent is essential for the collection, storage, and use of data."
However, due to the absence of a specific law in this regard, both government and private institutions have so far been using personal data at their discretion, the ministry said.
To address this issue, the draft ordinance has been prepared by analyzing international standards and the laws of neighbouring countries, it added.
"Feedback from stakeholders was taken into account to reflect business-friendly policies in the draft, which has now reached its final stage after thorough scrutiny."
