Asif Nazrul, a member of the National Awards Advisory Committee and law adviser, has said that this year, the Independence Award will be granted to deserving individuals beyond partisan and group considerations.
He made this statement to journalists on Sunday following a meeting of the National Awards Advisory Committee.
Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud was also present at the meeting.
The law adviser said: “In the past, several controversial individuals and institutions have received the National Award. Even organizations like RAB have been honored with the Independence Award. However, this award represents the highest national recognition."
He added: "Acknowledging its prestige, we have recommended names beyond political and group affiliations. Just as you were pleased with the Ekushey Padak recipients, you will be even more delighted with the Independence Award honorees. It will feel as though we are honored to be granting these awards.”
Asif Nazrul further mentioned that fewer than ten individuals will receive the Independence Award this year.
