Update : 07 Jan 2025, 09:53 PM

The government has revoked the passports of 97 people, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Of them, passports of Hasina and 74 others were cancelled by the Department of Passport and Immigration due to their alleged involvement in the July killings.

The Passport Department also cancelled the passports of 22 people who are allegedly involved in enforced disappearances.

The Chief Adviser's press wing came up with the figure during a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.

CA's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder briefed the reporters.

The press wing, however, did not mention the names.

Azad Majumder said that the Indian government is aware of cancelling the passport of Sheikh Hasina and has issued travel documents accordingly.

Additionally, Azad Majumder emphasized that there is no legal provision for holding more than one passport, and only diplomatic passports were affected by this cancellation.

Regarding the introduction of e-passports, he announced that expatriate Bangladeshis would soon receive SMS notifications when their e-passports are ready.

This initiative is intended to ease the process and reduce the difficulties faced by expatriates.

Azad Majumder also said the government's ongoing efforts to eradicate the influence of brokers around passport offices.

He explained that agents would now be appointed for passport applications to ensure a more streamlined and transparent process.

In a separate update, Azad Majumder assured that the printing of textbooks for students would be completed within the month.

He acknowledged the delay in distribution this year, explaining that all textbooks are being printed locally, which led to some setbacks.

The government has expressed regret over the delay and is working to resolve it promptly.
