The government has determined to bring back all Bangladeshis stranded abroad, including those in India, due to coronavirus outbreak once the situation gets normal.
"The foreign ministry is aware as regards to the welfare of the expatriate Bangladesh nationals. When the situation will become normal, the government is determined to repatriate all stranded Bangladeshis in India and other countries," said a statement issued by the ministry on Friday.
Most of the Bangladeshi travellers visit India for the purposes of tourism, medical treatment and education, it said.
According to the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi, about 2,500, including 1,000 students, are currently stranded in India.
The statement also said that a nationwide three-week lockdown is in place in India from March 25 till April 14.
During this period, all incoming flights will remain suspended and the Indian authorities are discouraging departures as well, it said.
Besides, it added that domestic communications, including, buses, trains and planes, have also been shut down.
The statement further said that officials of the missions in India are in touch with the stranded Bangladeshis through telephones.
The missions are making efforts to solve financial or any other problems being faced by the expatriates, it said.
