Many UP chairmen have a tendency to settle complaints through arbitration

Local government division Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed has said the government wants to introduce village courts at each union.

“We want to spread the activities of the village court to each union across the country,” he said on Sunday.

He made the remarks at a discussion with media personnel on “Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh (AVCB) Phase –II” project in the city’s Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.

Helal Uddin Ahmed said many union parishad chairmen have a tendency to settle complaints through arbitration instead of seeking the help of village courts.

“To stop this practice it is necessary to strengthen the village courts,” he added.

European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Rensje Teerink said EU is ever committed to strengthen social justice in Bangladesh.

National Project Director of AVCBII and Additional Secretary of LGD, Roxana Quader said the government is planning to move the village court under the revenue sector.

Following implementation of phase-I from 2006-2015, phase-II of the AVCB project started in 2016 in 1,080 unions, under a tri-partnership with EU, UNDP and the government of Bangladesh, to create wider access to dispute resolution services for the rural poor.
